Facebook recently announced a new feature that will begin testing this month, promoted posts for your personal Facebook page.  This feature has been available on business pages since May, so why the shift to personal pages?

Here is what Facebook said in a recent press release:

Every day, news feed delivers your posts to your friends. Sometimes a particular friend might not notice your post, especially if a lot of their friends have been posting recently and your story isn’t near the top of their feed.

When you promote a post – whether it’s wedding photos, a garage sale, or big news – you bump it higher in news feed so your friends and subscribers are more likely to notice it.

When you promote a post you can see how many more of your friends noticed it. 

The test is available to people with fewer than 5000 friends and subscribers.

Until now Facebook has determined your news feed based on your actions. This includes things like your comments or likes on other peoples posts, photos or videos. The people or pages you have interacted with most appear most in your news feed as simple as that…until now.

What’s the change?

Facebook is testing the option of promoting personal posts. For a price, Facebook will override the traditional methods and guarantee that your post receives more exposure. The question is, will people actually spend money to have their posts bumped to the top?

The jury is still out. Sure it would be great to be “in the know” when your friend announces a baby on the way, but the possibility of being bombarded by paid advertisements from your friends, not so much.

We are not sure if this one is going to sink or swim. Only time will tell.
